Breaking silos in oral health: empowering all healthcare professionalsA webinar spotlighting FDI’s Educational Module for Other Healthcare Professionals project, designed to equip non-oral health professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support better oral health outcomes in their communities. Through collaboration with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the project also extends its reach into pharmacy education and beyond, ensuring that oral health messages are embedded across a wide range of healthcare disciplines.
Oral health care should not be limited to dentists and dental teams. There is growing recognition that pharmacists, nurses, midwives, nutritionists, paediatricians, gynaecologists, and other healthcare professionals who regularly interact with patients are ideally positioned to deliver oral health messages, conduct basic screenings, and make timely referrals. Their involvement is critical to preventing oral diseases and supporting overall health.
This session will highlight the rationale for developing practical oral health resources for non-oral health professionals and underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Speakers will explore the connections between oral and systemic diseases, oral health during pregnancy, periodontal disease, and the specific needs of children and older adults, while also drawing attention to the global burden of oral disease and the need to integrate oral health across healthcare practice.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the purpose and scope of FDI’s Educational Module for Other Healthcare Professionals project.
- Learn how FDI and FIP are working together to expand oral health education through fact sheets and videos.
- Identify ways non-oral healthcare professionals can integrate oral health promotion into daily practice.
- Recognize the links between oral health, systemic disease, and specific patient populations (e.g., pregnant women, children, older adults).
- Explore strategies to strengthen collaboration between oral health teams and other healthcare providers.

Thank you for you inspiring talk Much to think about and actions for us to take!
Thanks for the conference.
Thank you for answering. Yes, I acknowledge as well that pharmacists are going above and beyond dispensing, and many would like to provide a more holistic approach, but time is an issue. Thanks again!
How about the recommendations aimed to tackle integration of dental care into the management strategies?
Impressive insights.
Agree- I would expect that we as oral health care professionals should begin with something as simple as “literacy” Education for patients susch as what Mr Louernco mentioned- Tooth brushing as prevention is a good example.
Childcare workers can teach preschoolers how to brush ..and help remove the fear of going to the dentists only to remove teeth
I don’t recomend health belief model. ı want to learn your recommendation
İt is only a sample
Thank you both for a very informative webinar. I also believe it is important to empower not only the patients but the other medical professionals to throw a wider net to help the dentists and hygienist. where can we get your information sheets?
Pharmacists in Europe are overworked and tend to advocate against additional responsibilities until existing issues have been solved or the pressure on the sector is reduced. What is your experience with getting pharmacists on board with being a front-line caretaker for oral health?
Hello
Pharmacists – wow Getting them on board with oral health education, prevention, advocacy and awareness is a stellar approach.
As you know the aim of health education is behavioural changing. Would you have a recomendation about a model such as health belief or life skills based health education for public
