A webinar in celebration of World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week, focusing on the vital role of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in dentistry. This event will spotlight new research, including a systematic review of dental AMS, highlighting the effectiveness of face-to-face education over remote methods and the success of audit & feedback when utilizing routinely collected data. However, access to such data remains a challenge.
The speakers will also reflect on insights from the UN High-Level Meeting on AMR, particularly on how patients prefer receiving AMR information directly from clinicians rather than through leaflets, emphasizing the need for effective communication strategies in AMS.
The session will feature two innovative interventions: a clinical decision support tool and a shared decision-making resource, both aimed at enhancing AMS through point of care support in dental practice.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the role of antimicrobial stewardship in dentistry
- Evaluate the effectiveness of AMS interventions
- Examine the use of audit and feedback in AMS
- Explore innovative tools to enhance AMS

How long do we have to wait for Phages to come into use?
Do you think that there will be an alternative to the use of antibiotics in the future?
Sorry Wendy—I was also curious about the shared decision-making tool (what you discussed)—I assume that is waiting for clinical trials to be completed, etc.
When one practises in a culture where patients demand antibiotics and antibiotics are routinely prescribed after surgery e.g. removal of wisdom teeth. How can the individual dentist decide to go against the tide and choose not to give antibiotics.
So informative.Thank you
