World Oral Health Day 2022: how can industry drive innovation to improve oral health?Ahead of World Oral Health Day (WOHD) on Sunday 20 March, FDI World Dental Federation and prominent stakeholders from the dental industry, will get together to discuss the role of innovation and technology in shaping the future of oral health.
Industry has a key role to play in providing the necessary tools to facilitate dental professional’s work on prevention, early detection and treatment of oral diseases globally.
Under the theme ‘Be Proud of Your Mouth’ for your happiness and well-being, the WOHD 2022 campaign provides an ideal opportunity to explore the links between oral health, general health and quality of life, and discuss the contributions that key innovation leaders are making to improve the oral health of millions of people across the world.
Today, an armada of new technologies is revolutionizing dentistry, easing the work of dental professionals, improving patient experiences, and also leading the transformation towards sustainable practices. Innovative oral health programmes and educational tools are fostering the adherence to good oral hygiene behaviors. In addition, some of these solutions provide cost-effective prevention and treatment options, improving access to care for underserved communities and populations.
These disruptive innovations may have a huge impact on how patients will improve their oral health knowledge and behaviour in the future, and on how dentists and dental teams will be able to deliver safer and more effective interventions, at both the individual and population levels.
In this session, Align Technology, Dentsply Sirona and Unilever, valued partners of the WOHD campaign, will present their perspectives on some of the strategies, technologies and tools that are shaping the future of oral health by helping dental professionals in the prevention, early detection and care of oral diseases so that people can be proud of their mouth.

iTero technology is amazing, but it is not accessible to all due to large sunk cost/investment. What is the strategy to make the benefits of this innovation be accessible to everyone to improve health inequities?

I love the innovation aspect to improve oral health which is easy and quick, However, I wonder the feasibility of this in a rural setting. I mean use of tech objects like smart phones to access the information. Are the people given these tech tools to allow them use the technology at hand?
